Students encourage water conservation

Admin | August 27, 2011

Scores of Israeli high school students will spend a week at Lake Kinneret aimed at raising awareness and encourage water conservation. Accompanied by guides from the Society of the Protection of Nature, the students will hike along the Israel trail and walk around the entire lake. During the week they will row on Lake Kinneret, sleep under the stars and meet with locals. SPNI official Eyal Meir who coordinated the trip said the organization believes in the power of youth to change and contribute toward the improvement of nature in Israel and the importance of preserving the lake. Many years of a below average rainfall in Israel has caused the water level in the lake to fall drastically and it has dipped to the “black line” beyond which water cannot be pumped without causing severe damage to the entire water supply.

Junior’s Farm — Live on ‘Wings Over Australia’ tour 1975

Admin | August 18, 2011

This clip comes from the 1975 Wings Over Australia leg of Paul McCartney & Wing’s 1975-76 World Tour. The date was November 13, 1975 and the venue was the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. The Wings line-up at the time was my favorite: Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Joe English. I thought the clip was of particular interest because despite the vastness of the standard McCartney catalog, there are no official live accounts of Junior’s Farm.

WHEAT SHEEP FARMING GAMBLING IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA.mp4

Admin | August 12, 2011

300 KM EAST OF PERTH NEAR MERREDIN LIES A 4000 HECTAR FARM PRODUCING WHEAT AND SHEEP. THE FARMER EXPLAINS SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF FARMING; DROUGHT, FROST, HEAT, AND LOW WHEAT PRICES. WIKIPEDIA The Wheatbelt region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields-Esperance region. It is bordered to the south by the South West and Great Southern regions, and to the west by the Indian Ocean, the Perth metropolitan area, and the Peel region. Altogether, it has an area of 154862 square kilometres (59793 sq mi) (including islands), and a population of about 72000 people. The population is widely distributed, with only about 16000 people living in the main towns of Northam, Narrogin, Merredin and Moora. The Wheatbelt encompasses a range of environments and industries. Near the coast, it receives relatively high rainfall and mild temperature, and its 150 kilometres (93 mi) of coastline is a significant tourist area. In contrast, the eastern fringe is very arid, and is mainly used for mining of minerals including gold, nickel and iron ore. The remainder to the region is highly suited to agriculture, and is the source of nearly two thirds of the state’s wheat production, half of its wool production, and the majority of its Lamb and mutton, oranges, honey, cut flowers and a range of other agricultural and pastoral products.

Innovation Conserves Water in Hawaii

Admin | August 2, 2011

Water is a limited resource. According to FAO, agriculture is the world’s largest consumer of water. Between now and 2050 the world’s water supply will have to feed and create livelihoods for an additional 2.7 billion people. It is essential to identify ways to preserve this precious resource. The Monsanto team in Hawaii took this challenge to heart, and were able to conserve 11 million gallons of water annually.
