The National Engineers Week Future City aims to stir interest in science, technology, engineering and math among young people. Students work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer-mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow. They must also conduct research for an essay on a pressing social need. This year, the essay centers on ways to improve water use by creating a home system that minimizes the use of municipal or externally supplied water for its daily requirements. Future City Regional Competitions will be held in January 2009 in 40 regions across the country. First-place winners from each qualifying regional competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 17th annual Future City National Finals in Washington, DC, February 16-18, 2009 during National Engineers Week. The national grand prize is a trip to US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. More than 30000 students from 1100 middle schools are expected to participate nationwide.
April 1998 With scrape in sheep, salmonella in chickens and mad cow disease in cattle, what epidemic will strike the pig? None, if we follow the example of Australia’s Great Southern Piggery, the world’s largest free-range pig farm. The Great Southern Piggery raises its pigs outside. The 3000 sows here graze, wallow and furrow in the sunshine - it’s pig heaven. In Europe, legislation will soon stop farmers from making animals spend their whole lives inside. Pork production will be drastically changed. More than 10% of Australia’s pigs are already raised on the open range. In Europe, that figure is now closer to 20%. Here, each sow produces 20 piglets a year - a better yield than the intensive indoor, battery-style pig farming. Once weaned, piglets spend 7 weeks leaping about on straw, developing weight and fitness. Their fate is nevertheless sealed: they all end up being sent off to market. Pigs living outside are fitter and can give birth unassisted. They also don’t get lame from urinating on their own hooves. They’re just a bit dirtier! And profits are good. A charming report on an issue which affects all of those who enjoy our bacon. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Create your own DIY guide at www.howcast.com or produce your own Howcast spots with the Howcast Filmmakers Program at www.howcast.com Thirty to 60 percent of urban fresh water is used for watering, and much of this is wasted. Learn to care for your lawn—and conserve water. To complete this How-To you will need: Native plants and drought-resistant landscaping Low, spreading plants to provide ground cover Water-efficient sprinklers Drip irrigation lines Mulch Step 1: Plant native shrubs, trees, and flowers that are adapted to the rainfall in your area. Step 2: Plant low, spreading plants such as sedum to provide living ground cover, which holds moisture in your soil. Step 3: Limit the amount of yard space given over to thirsty lawn, and increase the amount given to native plants or natural habitat. Step 4: If you use sprinklers, turn them on in early morning or after dusk rather than at midday, to reduce evaporation. Step 5: Adjust your sprinkler heads so the water droplets are large; fine mist evaporates more easily, so it doesn’t get to your plants’ roots. Step 6: Use micro or drip irrigation, a system of pipes or hoses that deliver water directly to the base of the plant. Drip …

A media assignment required us to conceptualize a TV series and to construct a trailer for one. I put this together in a weekend using mainly YouTube videos. We were to emphasize sound, but I did get carried away with the animals effects. Nevertheless, it does give some sensation of being in the country in rural Australia. The role of the documentary producer for this TV series is to express an understanding of a sense of country life in Western Australia gained through experience, research and investigation, and presented this interpretation through the intelligent organization and analysis of historical and present-day images and sounds. The outcome seeks to create meaning, an understanding and empathy by viewers towards the daily activities of Western Australians facing challenges and experiencing success in relatively isolated and diverse locations and professions. The title of the series is “Lonely Pubs of Western Australia.” Each half-hour episode would focus on a small, relatively isolated country pub with a settlement history dating back nearly to the Federation period. One unifying factor is the architecture, ideally a typically Federation hotel style with broad verandas, galvanised iron roof and colour stained glass windows. Each pub is situated in different geographical, climatic and economically diverse parts of Western Australia. Another unifying factor is the importance of the country pub throughout Australia as a social hub, replacing the church, as a …
