On one of my train filming outings I spent a few hours next to a small farm with a herd of curious Alpacas. While I waited for the trains to arrive these beautiful animals kept me company.
~PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION FIRST~ WARNING: some people may find some scenes in this video distressing This is just a video i made in my spare time to show what happens in Australian Bobby calf, Pork, Ultra fine wool and Live export industrys. * there is no intention of copyright* Bobby Calfs: over 700000 week-old calves discarded yearly as ‘waste products’ of the dairy industry. Most people aren’t aware that in order to produce milk, dairy cows are kept almost continually pregnant. Unwanted calves (known as ‘bobby calves’) are sent to slaughter in their first week of life so that milk can be harvested for human consumption. Unknown to most consumers, the dairy industry continues to cut costs at the expense of animals. Right now they want to make it legal to deny calves food for the last 30 hours of their lives. Pigs: In Australia, the majority of the 300000 female breeding pigs (sows) are kept inside sheds continually pregnant and confined. It is these animals that produce the piglets destined to become bacon, ham and pork products. Most sows are confined for at least some of their 16 week pregnancy in tiny metal individual stalls, (and one third for the entire pregnancy!) so small they are unable to turn around. At best they can take a small step forward. They have no bedding. They are forced to stand or lie on hard floors. Just prior to giving birth, they are moved to a ‘nursery’ which would outrage every Australian mother. Pending mothers are confined in an even smaller …

A state government committee is pushing for a major overhaul of Tasmania’s pig farming regulations. The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee is urging the government to ban the use of sow stalls, or cages, due to concerns about animal welfare. They want the use of stalls restricted to six weeks by 2014, with a complete ban to come into effect by 2017. Lyn White from the animal welfare group, Animals Australia, told the ABC’s Stateline program that Tasmania could become the first Australian state to adopt such a ban. “It’s fantastic that Tasmania may well be leading the rest of Australia in this,” she said. “Someone has to lead in circumstances like this and to say we were wrong, animals should never have been treated like this,” Ms White said.

Entry from: Denmark, Australia Entry Title: “Animal Farm Pt1: Strawberry Fields Forever” Entry: “Amazingly and brilliantly we managed to arrange a house sit for 9 weeks in Western Australia right down on the South Coast in a place called Denmark. We arranged it through a website and really weren’t sure what to expect but we were very pleased with how it has worked out. We met the family in Perth and spent the night at their daughters house and then made the 5 hour journey south to their farm. The place is really amazing. The guy built it himself about 20 years ago after they bought the 108 acres on the South Coast Highway. The house itself is a big hectagon shape made of local wood with lovely stone floors and a massive open plan living area with the kitchen, lounge, dining room surrounded by five sets of french doors and a big wooden veranda all around. After living here for quite some time they decided to make an extra bit of money by building four holiday chalets which are just out of sight of the house but still on the grounds. So this is all ours for the next two months! They have 150 sheep, a dozen chickens, a load of kangaroos including 3 that are very tame as they were bottle fed and a shetland pony. Quite different from our city centre apartment in Leeds. However, we are really loving our time …

News report from the ABC Lateline program about the welfare of animals farmed for food in Australia and the deceptive labelling of animal products. Descriptions such as “Free Range”, “Organic”, “Environmental”, and “Farm Fresh” are used to attract consumer’s eyes and allay concerns about animal welfare. But many of these labels are stuck on food with little scrutiny, leaving consumers to make decisions based on trust. There are big profits to be made on labelling lies and until now those engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct have faced absolutely no punishment. And a warning this story contains disturbing images. Featured in the report are: Patty Mark from Animal Liberation Victoria, The ALV Openrescue team, Peter Singer, Claire Hughes from Choice, John Kaye from New South Wales Greens, Tony Coote from Mulloon Creek Natural Farms, James Kellaway from Egg Corporation, Graeme Samuel from Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
