On one of my train filming outings I spent a few hours next to a small farm with a herd of curious Alpacas. While I waited for the trains to arrive these beautiful animals kept me company.
April 1998 With scrape in sheep, salmonella in chickens and mad cow disease in cattle, what epidemic will strike the pig? None, if we follow the example of Australia’s Great Southern Piggery, the world’s largest free-range pig farm. The Great Southern Piggery raises its pigs outside. The 3000 sows here graze, wallow and furrow in the sunshine - it’s pig heaven. In Europe, legislation will soon stop farmers from making animals spend their whole lives inside. Pork production will be drastically changed. More than 10% of Australia’s pigs are already raised on the open range. In Europe, that figure is now closer to 20%. Here, each sow produces 20 piglets a year - a better yield than the intensive indoor, battery-style pig farming. Once weaned, piglets spend 7 weeks leaping about on straw, developing weight and fitness. Their fate is nevertheless sealed: they all end up being sent off to market. Pigs living outside are fitter and can give birth unassisted. They also don’t get lame from urinating on their own hooves. They’re just a bit dirtier! And profits are good. A charming report on an issue which affects all of those who enjoy our bacon. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
~PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION FIRST~ WARNING: some people may find some scenes in this video distressing This is just a video i made in my spare time to show what happens in Australian Bobby calf, Pork, Ultra fine wool and Live export industrys. * there is no intention of copyright* Bobby Calfs: over 700000 week-old calves discarded yearly as ‘waste products’ of the dairy industry. Most people aren’t aware that in order to produce milk, dairy cows are kept almost continually pregnant. Unwanted calves (known as ‘bobby calves’) are sent to slaughter in their first week of life so that milk can be harvested for human consumption. Unknown to most consumers, the dairy industry continues to cut costs at the expense of animals. Right now they want to make it legal to deny calves food for the last 30 hours of their lives. Pigs: In Australia, the majority of the 300000 female breeding pigs (sows) are kept inside sheds continually pregnant and confined. It is these animals that produce the piglets destined to become bacon, ham and pork products. Most sows are confined for at least some of their 16 week pregnancy in tiny metal individual stalls, (and one third for the entire pregnancy!) so small they are unable to turn around. At best they can take a small step forward. They have no bedding. They are forced to stand or lie on hard floors. Just prior to giving birth, they are moved to a ‘nursery’ which would outrage every Australian mother. Pending mothers are confined in an even smaller …
In Australia, millions of animals suffer from horrific brutality & cruelty before death. We factory farm most of our animals, live export millions of them, feed them hormones to make them produce more milk, or grow faster for the slaughter. We mules our sheep with shearers & castrate piglets with no anaestetic. Before Australians point the finger at other countries for brutal treatment of farm animals; we should begin by looking at how they are treated here.

The Qingiing Sheep Show area is perched eastwards above the main Qingjing Village ( Cingjing Veterans’ Farm ) on Taiwan’s Central Cross Island Highway (Route 14) in Nantou County; also between Renai Township and Mt. Hehuan; 8 km northeast of Wushe. Originally, the Qingjing area was home to War Veterans who farmed the land. The Farm was opened to public on February 20th, 1961, and from then on became a major tourism destination, partly or mostly due to the fact that some kilometers further up the highway is Taiwan’s most popular High Mountain playground Mt. Hehuan Motorist wishing to reach Mt. Hehuan from the west side of the Island must pass directly through the Qingjing area which offers Resorts, Private lodging, Roadside stalls selling locally grown fruits and vegetables, Art crafts, restaurants etc. For some, it is just another Tourist trap but, for others, it is a beautiful place to spend the night or just take a break. Much of the Resorts, houses etc in this area were built of Swiss and Old English design, and with the rolling green hillsides, the High mountain Backdrop and Cypress trees throughout the area, one could easily imagine that they were actually some where in Switzerland. Every Sunday at 9:30am, the Qingjing sheep farm puts on a European style sheep roundup, sheep shearing and bullwhip show. The Star of this show is a New Zealander who lives in Taiwan. Raised on large, remote farms, Australian sheep enjoy space to roam and very little human contact. But due to Australia’s live export industry, millions of Australian sheep suffer a fate far worse than death every year. They are destined for a horrific journey to slaughter overseas - herded onto a packed truck and driven across the country, sometimes in scorching heat. It’s then onto a ship where conditions are much worse. They’re terrified and will spend up to three weeks on the crowded ship …
The feral pig (Sus scrofa) is one of the most widespread and damaging pest animals in Queensland. Feral pigs in Australia are descendants of various subspecies of the domestic pig. Accidental and deliberate releases of domestic and semi-feral pigs have resulted in a large feral pig population.
Recent investigations have revealed a ‘growing’ animal industry that the vast majority of Australians would be unaware of. ‘Ultra-fine’ wool growers supply an elite international market and wealthy buyers from the world’s foremost fashion houses. Ultra-fine wool growing is an intensive animal industry. Specially-bred sheep are kept indoors in individual small pens 24 hours a day for four or five years. Nylon coats are worn by the ’shedded’ sheep to further ensure that dust and dirt does not …
