Free Range Pigs - Australia

Admin | January 25, 2012

April 1998 With scrape in sheep, salmonella in chickens and mad cow disease in cattle, what epidemic will strike the pig? None, if we follow the example of Australia’s Great Southern Piggery, the world’s largest free-range pig farm. The Great Southern Piggery raises its pigs outside. The 3000 sows here graze, wallow and furrow in the sunshine - it’s pig heaven. In Europe, legislation will soon stop farmers from making animals spend their whole lives inside. Pork production will be drastically changed. More than 10% of Australia’s pigs are already raised on the open range. In Europe, that figure is now closer to 20%. Here, each sow produces 20 piglets a year - a better yield than the intensive indoor, battery-style pig farming. Once weaned, piglets spend 7 weeks leaping about on straw, developing weight and fitness. Their fate is nevertheless sealed: they all end up being sent off to market. Pigs living outside are fitter and can give birth unassisted. They also don’t get lame from urinating on their own hooves. They’re just a bit dirtier! And profits are good. A charming report on an issue which affects all of those who enjoy our bacon. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

The Provenance of Beef - Eaglehawk Farms, Australia

Admin | December 7, 2011

Two groups at our private artisan steak tastings in San Francisco and Napa in March 2010 were in for a surprise treat: New York Strip Loins (Porterhouse) and Rib-Eye (Scotch Fillet) steaks from Eaglecreek Farms in the New England Tablelands Region, New South Wales, Australia. The good fortune was a result of a last minute business trip and the kindness of the people on Twitter, including Christie Connelly of www.figandcherry.com. The steaks from Ian and Sally Vivers’ Black Angus cattle were wet-aged and cut at the family’s own processing facility. Practical Beef Management Product Links: Amazon.com: www.amazon.com Amazon UK: www.amazon.co.uk Amazon DE: www.amazon.de Hi, I am Russell Seears, I have lived on the land and worked in the Australian cattle industry or in associated industries for most of my life. Cattle do have brains, they can understand directions from humans and they will respond to the sound of a human’s voice. Cattle will remember a management system, so give cattle credit for having an understanding and educate them at weaning, then you will find that your cattle management system will work more smoothly and effectively. I do hope you can gain some benefit from my book on the management and handling breeding cows. Regards, Russell Seears.
