Practical Beef Management Product Links: Amazon.com: www.amazon.com Amazon UK: www.amazon.co.uk Amazon DE: www.amazon.de Hi, I am Russell Seears, I have lived on the land and worked in the Australian cattle industry or in associated industries for most of my life. Cattle do have brains, they can understand directions from humans and they will respond to the sound of a human’s voice. Cattle will remember a management system, so give cattle credit for having an understanding and educate them at weaning, then you will find that your cattle management system will work more smoothly and effectively. I do hope you can gain some benefit from my book on the management and handling breeding cows. Regards, Russell Seears.

Livestock exports: In for the long haul

Admin | May 9, 2011

The Walmsley Family from Coolup focus their sheep enterprise entirely on supplying the live export market. Throughout the year, Eric Walmsley buys sheep out of sale yards to fatten in the paddock before selling them into the export market, with an annual turn-off of 30-35 thousand head per year. Current export volumes nationally run at around four million sheep a year. Prior to each shipment, export buyers spend up to three weeks sourcing sheep, drafting out any that are unsuitable to travel. The time between farm and ship is spent at an export feedlot, which enables the animals to acclimatise to the shipboard environment ensuring a happy healthy animal is delivered to the other end, which is the best outcome for the animal and for the industry.

Reading shep genes (episode 4)

Admin | February 15, 2010

The Australian sheep industry is about to enter a new era that will offer faster, cheaper and more accurate breeding information. A new piece of technology called a SNP chip is in the final stages of development. The SNP chip is a small chip of glass that can hold up to 60000 known gene markers from sheep DNA. If validated, around a thousand of these gene markers will form the basis of an industry SNP chip, offering markers for the most sought after traits. These will then be embedded into Australian Sheep Breeding Values (asbvs) under the current suite of genetic improvement tools - namely LAMBPLAN and MERINOSELECT for all producers to use. DNA from a blood sample will show if any of the animals genes match the favourable genes on the industry 1000 SNP chip.
