The National Engineers Week Future City aims to stir interest in science, technology, engineering and math among young people. Students work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer-mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow. They must also conduct research for an essay on a pressing social need. This year, the essay centers on ways to improve water use by creating a home system that minimizes the use of municipal or externally supplied water for its daily requirements. Future City Regional Competitions will be held in January 2009 in 40 regions across the country. First-place winners from each qualifying regional competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 17th annual Future City National Finals in Washington, DC, February 16-18, 2009 during National Engineers Week. The national grand prize is a trip to US Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. More than 30000 students from 1100 middle schools are expected to participate nationwide.

Learn to care for your lawn—and conserve water. To complete this How-To you will need: Native plants and drought-resistant landscaping Low, spreading plants to provide ground cover Water-efficient sprinklers Drip irrigation lines Mulch Step 1: Plant native shrubs, trees, and flowers that are adapted to the rainfall in your area. Step 2: Plant low, spreading plants such as sedum to provide living ground cover, which holds moisture in your soil. Step 3: Limit the amount of yard space given over to thirsty lawn, and increase the amount given to native plants or natural habitat. Step 4: If you use sprinklers, turn them on in early morning or after dusk rather than at midday, to reduce evaporation. Step 5: Adjust your sprinkler heads so the water droplets are large; fine mist evaporates more easily, so it doesn’t get to your plants’ roots. Step 6: Use micro or drip irrigation, a system of pipes or hoses that deliver water directly to the base of the plant. Drip …

The gorgeous + green musician Natalie Imbruglia got up close and personal about water conservation recently when she invited ecological detergent brand Ecover into her English home. In the short film Natalie talks about the benefits of Ecover products and the brand’s partnership with WaterAid. Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to travel to Ethiopia with Ecover and WaterAid to highlight the issues around safe water + sanitation in Africa. Now Natalie Imbruglia and Ecover are showing us what we can do at home to help conserve water for those who desperately need it.
*Apologies for crap quality - twas a phone cam* I’m driving home, turn my head to the right and see a bloody cop copter hovering above the dried up Lake Gwelup. So I did what any other person would do. Squeal in delight and drive in that direction! Apparently someone had been growing marijuana in the dry lake/swamp (whatever you wish to call it), and it had been there for quiiiiiite some time. The marijuana plants you see in this video is just the start. I left because my phone ran out of battery. Apparently 70+ bushes were discovered. Someone is going tooo bee PISSED OFF!

Please Watch! This is for a school project… please help the world keep the water clean, as well as conserving it! You can help by not throwing everything down your toilet. If you have medication you want to get rid of, give it to your local pharmacy and they’ll help you take care of it there. Don’t wash your car on the driveway because it’ll all end up back into the river untreated. If you go to a car washing place, the water gets treated before going back into the river. Don’t pour chemicals down the drain! Call and find a place where they can professionally get rid of it without putting it back into our water. Our water on earth is limited and is disappearing because we use it faster than it gets replenished. Keep all the water left on earth drinkable!! Please show this to your friends and family… spread the word! 5 Tips for Conserving Water: 1) Save water from washing fruits and vegetables or such, and use it to water your plants and garden(do that by putting a large bowl underneath) Why? Saving the water from washing fruits and vegetables is saving water from just going down the drain. That saves a significant amount of water. 2) Drink water from only ONE designated cup Why? Constantly using different cups will lead to washing more cups. Washing more cups will use up more water. 3) Only wash full loads of laundry Why? You should do that because a larger load of laundry uses a smaller amount of water than an equivalent amount of laundry seperated into two different …
